This one-day introduction to vision impairment and dementia awareness will provide you with an opportunity to learn about vision impairment and the additional impact of living with dementia. You will also learn about tips and techniques on how best to support someone living with these conditions. 


Course Aim:

To enable course delegates to give the best possible support to people living with a vision impairment and dementia as well as strategies, techniques and equipment for retaining independence and living safely, information about existing support services, ways to help prevent social isolation and methods to aid effective communication.


Course Objectives:

  • To discuss the various different types of sight loss
  • To discuss different types of Dementia and how they relate or compare to vision loss
  • To explore the impacts of living with a vision impairment and dementia
  • To learn how best to communicate with and support someone living with a vision impairment and dementia
  • To learn the sighted guide technique 
  • To find out more about other support services


Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the day learners will be able to:

  • Better support someone with a vision impairment and dementia
  • Have a greater understanding of different types of vision impairment and dementia and their impact
  • Have a greater understanding of the possible communication needs of a person with a vision impairment and dementia
  • Have an awareness of possible practical ways to assist people with a vision impairment and dementia  
  • Have an awareness of the sighted guide technique and of the additional skills required for someone who has dementia
  • Have an understanding of other support services available  



Vicky Rushworth & Dave Smith
Vicky and Dave, partners in VIDA Training who have over 25 years combined experience of working in the disability field and living with sight loss enabling us to provide lots of anecdotal experiences, exercises and interesting discussions.

Their training style is relaxed but informative, using factual information, anecdotal experiences and practical exercises to aid learning and group discussions. They encourage people asking questions throughout the training and sharing their thoughts and experiences within the group.
