We don’t often see those words in the same sentence, yet they are very much a part of the lives of many people living with a dementia – and which often remain unspoken. Re-acquaint yourself with the positive aspects of adult sexuality and how these are affected by changes in brain and behaviour. Find a new person-centred model for having those tricky conversations to enhance the wellbeing of all concerned. Based on Danuta’s latest book of the same title, this will be an interactive workshop with scenarios based on her rich experience. Please bring your own for discussion. Copies of Danuta’s book will be available to purchase on the day.

The one-day training course is suitable for anyone with an interest in sex, dementia and wellbeing across the health and social care sector, counselling, pastoral care, former, current or future partners.

Course Aim:
The course will explore how sexuality does not desert us when we develop a dementia, and how to appreciate the changes that may come as a result of a diagnosis and how to develop person-centred conversations to help in ensuring wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the day participants will have had the opportunity to:

  • Refresh their own attitudes and understanding of sexuality
  • Explore the effects cognitive change and behaviour change may have on adult sexuality
  • Remind ourselves of the components of wellbeing according to Tom Kitwood and how this can include sexuality
  • Discuss scenarios based on real experience
  • Try out a new person-centred model to assist with tricky conversations
  • Evaluate and validate their own practice
  • Explore ways to share the learning with clients, patients, partners and staff

Training Style/Approach
The training will be Interactive, person-centred, relaxed, FUN, using real scenarios and material from a respected and groundbreaking new publication ‘Dementia, Sex and Wellbeing: A Person-centred Guide for People with Dementia, Their Partners, Caregivers and Professionals’.
