Seeing is believing: understanding changes in visual perception for people with dementia

Course Aim:
To recognise the impact of sight loss and perpetual difficulties on people with dementia and develop ways of maximising residual vision and perception. This course is suitable for anyone who is involved with supporting or caring for people with dementia - professionals and carers. No previous knowledge of visual impairment necessary.

 

Course Objectives:

  • To understand dementia through a bio-psycho-social model
  • To stand in the shoes of the person with dementia who has visual and/or perceptual difficulties
  • To discuss and explore reasons for behaviour relating to visual and perceptual difficulties
  • To recognise the range of aids and adaptations available to assist with visual difficulties
  • To discuss related issues experienced by participants

  • Identify the main causes of sight loss
  • Recognise the effects of ageing on sight
  • Differentiate between sight loss and perceptual difficulties for people with dementia 
  • Apply this knowledge to understand the behaviour of people with dementia
  • Plan appropriately to support people with dementia who have visual and perceptual difficulties

 

Course Trainer
Penny Redwood has worked in the social care field for over 30 years, as a qualified social worker, team manager and project manager. She project-managed award winning teams for the Dementia Services Collaborative and POPPS programme in Leeds, including running projects to hear the voice of people with dementia about services they were receiving. Penny now works as an independent educator and trainer, having set up her own company called Vision for Dementia; she is particularly interested in the combination of sight impairment and dementia. She provides independent user evaluations of services and is a WRAP facilitator. When not working, Penny enjoys walking and cycling in Yorkshire where she lives.
