This course is aimed at those who provide care or support to individuals with dementia in a wide range of settings.

Course Aim:

This programme provides the opportunity for the learner to understand and begin to establish a therapeutic relationship with individuals experiencing dementia. This is based on the use of person-centred validation process and interactions skills.

This course mapped across QCF Dementia 210.

Our coaching is skills-based rather than academic, making learning an easy and fun experience. We use film, case studies and ‘real-time’ skills coaching to build confidence and competence in learners.


Course Objectives:

  • Understand the theoretical approach underlining person- centred communication in dementia care and support. 
  • Understand the impact of the ageing and sensory loss through the eyes of a person experiencing dementia.
  • Understand how to establish a therapeutic relationship using person-centred validation process and skills.
  • Be able to apply person-centred validation verbal and non-verbal interactions skills to develop therapeutic relationships with people experiencing dementia.


Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the day learners will be able to:

  • Describe the basic human psychological needs and goals that motivate the behaviour and language of people experiencing dementia, as described by Kitwood (1997).
  • Explain the impact of a person’s significant life themes and memory has on the experience of dementia (Erikson 1963)
  • Describe the person-centred stages of Resolution (Validation Method, Feil 2015).
  • Discuss the experience of the sensory losses that can accompany ageing and dementia and how this affect communication.
  • Describe the core conditions necessary in establishing a therapeutic relationship (Carl Rogers 1995).
  • Practice person-centred validation skills to facilitate positive interactions with an individual at different stages of dementia



Julia Pitkin
Julia trained as an occupational therapist and has a post graduate Certificate in Dementia Studies. She is the UK’s first certified Validation Trainer in Dementia Care, completing her training in Pennsylvania, USA. Her decision to specialise in dementia care was influenced by her work as a quality care auditor for a private sector accreditation company and for the former National Care Standards Commission, where she identified training needs for staff caring for people living with dementia in care homes. Her specialist interest and passion is in person-centred listening and communication, having recently made a training film called ‘Conversations that Matter: breaking through dementia’.
